Do you think your body knows what disease you have? Does the body have enough wisdom to agree with your doctor’s diagnosis? Can it show you how to heal your arthritis and end the pain of irritable bowel syndrome, or any other disease for that matter?
The answer is actually a bit nuanced.
Your body does not have the wisdom to be aware of the doctor’s diagnosis. Instead, it follows a deeper kind of wisdom. The wisdom of balance, called homeostasis. The body’s structure and function have only one role, only one purpose, to keep you healthy.

The Role of Balance in Natural Healing
It was only when I learned about homeostasis that the whole picture of natural medicine came into focus. Whether it is a chiropractic adjustment, a homeopathic remedy, a nutritional supplement or any other of the vast array of natural products and protocols available to us today, they all have one thing in common. They are all designed to support the body’s natural mechanisms of healing.
Scientists give a name to the energy that fuels your body’s singular purpose. And that is homeostasis! The energy of balance. And the body’s function is to keep us in balance. The body only knows two conditions:
- Balance, which equals health
- Imbalance which equals disease.

The disease can be mild or severe, it is still just an imbalance to the body. The structures and mechanisms of life constantly strive to bring your precious human organism back to balance. It seems logical that if we have a disease of any name, we should do everything we can to support the body’s efforts. That should certainly be the first step.
Two Very Different Paths in Healthcare
At the heart of it, this is where the two big players in healthcare part ways. Natural and functional medicine work with the body, focusing on supporting the core systems that keep us alive and well.
Modern medicine, on the other hand, in partnership with the pharmaceutical industry—leans on what you might call “heroic intervention.” And to be fair, that approach can be lifesaving in emergencies like trauma or serious infections. But when it comes to chronic or autoimmune conditions, that same high-intensity, fix-it-now energy fails us.
Modern medicine assumes the body has failed, so it needs outside agents, like drugs, to disrupt or override its processes. So, here’s the real question: which approach feels right to you:
- Natural medicines approach of working with your body’s natural ability to heal and supporting the energy of homeostasis, or
- Modern medicines approach of stepping in to control and manage symptoms, even if it means pushing the body further out of balance?
Choose wisely my friends.
The Three Core Causes of Disease in the Body
As I began my path in natural medicine in the early 1990s it was overwhelming and confusing. I was learning from naturopaths, chiropractors and functional medicine doctors and there were so many different products and protocols that I couldn’t figure out what worked, what didn’t and what would be best in any person’s particular case.
Once I was able to see the differences that I’ve outlined above more clearly, I began to realize that the various products and protocols were all part of a healthcare system that honors the wisdom of the body. So simple yet so profound. Our medical profession has gotten ahead of themselves and needs to go back and study the lessons that nature has taught us.
To add a little clarity to this story, in the natural medicine world there is an underlying belief that all disease is caused by the breakdown of normal function in one of three critical areas within the body:
- The body is not getting something that it needs.
- The body is unable to effectively remove what it cannot use, including both wastes and toxins.
- The vitality is low.

Vitality and the Future of Healing through Quantum Science
The first of these three has two components. We have to choose healthy foods, and the function of the digestive system must be optimal. All of this is essential for maintaining homeostasis, the body’s stable internal environment. Interestingly, as important as digestion is to the natural medicine folks, disruption to the digestive system is the most common side effect of pharmaceutical medicines.
The removal of wastes and toxins is the purpose of our detoxification system, which features our liver, kidneys, spleen and lymph system. This function can be particularly critical to those who work with toxic chemicals or in toxic environments, as it helps the body return to a state of homeostasis.
And then comes vitality, our life force. This may well be the most exciting part of the structure and function of your human organism simply because we know so little about it. And yet it is all around us. Vitality is your life force.
We know so little about it because the science that will someday help us fully understand vitality is quantum physics. And we have just scratched the surface of how quantum physics will change our understanding of the dynamic system we call the human body and its constant drive for homeostasis
